Prediction of acoustic resonance in a multi-stage high-speed axial compressor

The PARMA project involves numerical and experimental investigation of acoustic resonances in 4½-stage axial compressors. The aim is to characterize and develop a model for predicting and suppressing this physical phenomenon.

Motivation and objectives

Under certain aeroacoustic conditions, acoustic resonances can occur in turbomachinery. Acoustic modes are reflected in such a way that they overlap to form a standing wave with very high sound pressures.

These non-speed-harmonic alternating pressures can cause component vibrations and even structural failure.

Responsible institute

The project is managed by the Institute for Turbomachinery and Fluid Dynamics.
